Raghuram Rajan – I Do What I Do

A great package of financial wisdom!

Touted as one of the most anticipated books from one of the most trusted & celebrated economists of India, ex-RBI Governor, Raghuram Rajan, who was in news for right or wrong reasons (I don’t think I am qualified enough to comment on that), was on my to-be-read list since it was first announced. So much has been said about him, his ways of working, his vision for India and this spiked my curiosity to read & know more about the person & his take on things.

To begin with, I must say that the book is very well arranged set of various speeches made by Mr. Rajan. However, what I was, & I am sure most of the readers were expecting out of this book were some sensational/controversial material in the book and let me break your myth here is, the content of this book is far from anything that will grab eyeballs in the wrong light. It is a very well-thought out book which supports a lot of initiatives by our current government with no comments on demonetization though, explains RBI’s stand on most of the things that happened in Mr. Rajan’s tenure and his own personal perspective on a lot of things. My personal favorite is the story about the title of the book. During one of his speeches, a journalist asked him a question to which he answer “Rajan replied, “My name is Raghuram Rajan and I do what I do.” This statement by him grabbed the headlines in almost all the major newspapers and I personally think that book couldn’t have been titled better.

Overall, this book gives deep insights by giving a very detailed & fair assessment of the current state of Indian Economy, the challenges faced by RBI with potential solutions amongst many other things. The book is a great package of financial wisdom and those who are interested in Macro Economics would surely find this book interesting as long as they can patiently sail through the book.

As a lay-man who bunked most of the classes in economics in school and has low or rather zilch interest in Indian economics & politics, this book for me was an easy read. What stood-out for me that while these speeches made by Mr. Rajan were done on various occasions over a very long period of time, the consistency of his thoughts & approach could be clearly seen which exemplifies that he is a true visionary who knows what he’s talking about and can back it up with substance.

I recommend this book to all those who want to understand the current Indian economics & its challenges in the simplest possible way through the words of a real rockstar – who is an avid quizzer, likes reading works of Leo Tolstoy, J.R.R Tolkien and Upmanyu Chatterjee, loves playing tennis and squash and is a marathoner too. The book is available at a Landmark store near you or you can also order it online from here.
